Draught

Encouraging the breeds natural instincts

Usually October - March

In the colder months we train our dogs in draught, which is also known as carting. This involves obedience work (called control), manoeuvres in the cart, and a haul in the cart with various weights. For those who do not with to train using the cart, they may join us for obedience work and a walk. We meet at around 10:30 - 11:00am each Sunday and finish mid afternoon for a drink & natter in the golf club! Each training session is £3 per dog along with our annual membership fee, however if you're new you are welcome to attend 3 training sessions prior to joining.

Why we train

Newfoundlands were originally bred for carting and hauling, they were commonly found hauling fishermen's nets out of the ocean, and carting wood up & down the hilly streets of the Newfoundland out-ports. For this reason we train with modern carts to preserve the breeds natural instincts. It's really important to build up your dogs strength, muscles and endurance gradually in the cart to prevent any injuries. Once a dog is confident and fit enough to pull heavier loads, we train towards the certified breed club tests which range from beginners level to level 4. At Christmas we take part in tree pulls for charity and even give children sleigh rides!
